How Exhaust Systems Work

The Exhaust System is designed primarily to get the exhaust gases from the motor to the rear of the vehicle while quietening the gases along the way.

Basic Exhaust Setup:

  • 1. From the motor the exhaust gases pass through a cast iron manifold which is restrictive (this can be changed to extractors)
  • 2. The gases flow from the manifold through the engine pipe and into the catalytic converter. Established as a legal requirement close to 20 years ago, the catalytic converter converts harmful gases into safer emissions.
  • 3. The gasses then pass through a resonator (a small center muffler)
  • 4. From here the gases stream along the connecting pip to the rear muffler. The muffler on most vehicles works by changing the direction of the gases and making the sound-waves counteract and consequently quieter.
  • 5. Finally the gases leave the vehicle via the tailpipe.

*Note:

This is a general description of exhaust systems' parts and how they interact. Some variations may exist depending on the make/model of the car and its modification.

Exhaust Extractors

Chasing More Power?

Extractors make it easier for the car engine to push exhaust gases out of the cylinders. With your cars engine running more efficiently, you will notice improvements in fuel economy, and performance.

5 great reasons to fit extractors to your car:

   1. You'll get up to 15% better fuel economy.
   2. You'll get increased performance.
   3. You'll get more torque.
   4. You'll get a cooler and cleaner running car engine.
   5. Your Auto transmission will run cooler.

Tuned Length Extractors

They work exceptionally well in the high rev range and ideal for drag racing.
TRI-Y Design Extractors

The most common design of car exhaust extractors, Tri-y exhaust extractors give you more power in the rev range that you use on the street.

As a general rule you should anticipate an increase in power, performance and fuel economy of around 10% under normal driving conditions.

Performance Mufflers

Increase performance and enhance sound

The muffler is responsible for reducing the sound made by your exhaust sytem.

As the gases leave the engine and make their way through the exhaust system, they're extremely loud. Mufflers were created to muffle the noise by bouncing the gases around and slowing them down.

While mufflers perform a great job in reducing sound, they can be very restrictive and limit performance. Changing a standard muffler to a performance muffler can help increase performance and enhance sound.

Fibreglass filled straight through muffler provides best performance and biggest volume

Straight Through Performance Mufflers

These Straight through Exhaust mufflers are fibreglass packed with a perforated tube and have very little restriction but can be a little noisy for some people or some cars.

Out of all our mufflers the straight through muffler is ideal for those wanting better performance and more sound.

Glass pack chambered muffler provides great performance and sound

Chambered Mufflers

This glass pack muffler is a great muffler for getting a happy medium between performance and sound.

As you can see the muffler is basically straight though, but the expansion chamber in the middle cuts out some of the drone.

Cat Converters and High Flow Cat Converters

How do cat converters work?

Introduced to Australian vehicles in 1986, catalytic converters clean up the gases made by petrol engines.

Fitted to the exhaust system, they look like a small muffler and were established as a legal requirement close to 20 years ago.

The combustion process of a petrol engine is never perfect. Dangerous gases, such as nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons will arise and it is the job of the catalytic converter to reduce these to safer emissions.

The catalytic converter will convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide; hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water; nitrogen oxide back into nitrogen and oxygen.

How can cat converters fail?

   1. They become clogged
   2. They get poisoned
   3. The engine has bad exhaust valves
   4. Plugs fail causing unburned fuel to overheat the converter

The Solution: We can replace your damaged cat converter with a standard cat or with a hi-flow cat converter in under 1 hour!

What are high flow cat converters?

'High flow' cat converters often referred as 'hi-flow' cat converters have a greater surface area than regular cat converters creating less restriction and hence a better flow of gases. They are available in mild and stainless steel. A new high flow cat converter will be a welcome addition to your exhaust system with the potential to maximise its current output.

Car Accessories

Improve the overall performance

A lot of our products are available in mild steel or stainless steel. When making the decision between a mild steel or stainless steel option, durability is the point of difference. Stainless steel will last longer, require less frequent maintenance and improves the overall appearance of your vehicle.

Stainless Steel Mufflers

At Mettam's Mufflers we carry a large variety of stainless steel mufflers that deliver a distinct sound and look to every car. Our stainless steel cannon mufflers are easily our most popular style of stainless mufflers. There are a lot of cheap cannons on the market at the moment and while some may look nice they will never be up to scratch. Our cannons are made of high grade stainless steel on the inside and outside of the muffler. They come highly polished and will be guaranteed for 10 years.

Stainless Steel Tips & Chrome Ends

Mettam’s Mufflers carry a huge range of stainless steel tips and chrome ends to provide your exhaust system with the finishing touch that you desire. If you're not sure what look you're after, why not come in to one of our three stores and have a chat with a muffler and exhaust expert?

SS Induction Kits

SS Induction Kits are designed to get more cool air into your engine. Cool air has more oxygen than warm air, therefore increasing combustion which results in more power, better performance, better fuel economy and increased acceleration. Mettam's Mufflers Perth has a wide range of SS Induction Kit brands to suit your needs.

The SS Induction "Big Mouth"

SS Inductions Big Mouth range combines a larger induction with a larger entry into the airbox resulting in a higher volume of air that flows more freely. You still have the factory airbox but with the extra cooler air you will get a nice performance boost and use less fuel.

The SS Induction "Growler"

The SS Inductions Growler range replaces the factory airbox altogether and combines a high-flow inverted cone filter with a less-restrictive specially-shaped airbox. Airflow is captured from behind and underneath the headlight through a huge opening in the streamlined airbox and directed through the pod filter via a shorter path to the engine.
